 Artist Description

A nostalgic trip down memory lane has brought about the reformation of one of Australia's most famous big dance bands, the "Gaiety Swing Band" which is now known as the "Shawnuff Swing Band".

The era was post war, in the late forties and early fifties, when the original "Gaiety Swing Band" was indeed in full swing at the Gaiety Milk Bar in Oxford Street, Darlinghurst. Behind the milk bar was a giant auditorium, complete with a dance floor, where young and old jived to the big sounds of such jazz greats as Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington. Those were the halcyon days in Sydney of the legendary dance halls, such as the Trocadero, Surryville, the Albert Palais, the Paradance and the Rivoli. They were packed to the rafters week in and week out, as the jitterbug craze swept the world.

Today nineteen members of the Shawnuff Swing Band are back again and playing better than ever, and, like good wine, their music has matured and mellowed. It has been fine tuned and polished by age and experience, with the result that today the Shawnuff Swing Band is undoubtedly world class.
